The Archaeology of Crete

Monday, September 13 @ 1:45 pm – 3:45 pm

COURSE REF: C3679661
TUTOR: Simon Tomson

Course runs for 10 Weeks.

We shall be looking at the location, geography and peopling of the Cretan island. It was settled successively by peoples from Asia, Europe and Africa, making the island the virtual crossroads of the Eastern Mediterranean basin. A succession of Neolithic and Bronze Age cultures became established, followed by the impressive local Minoan Bronze Age and the mainland Greek Mycenean migration. Classical civilisation then embraced the island, followed by a Roman occupation, Byzantine colonisation and then Arabic settlement. After the 4th Crusade of 1204, Crete fell under the influence of Venice and subsequently the Ottoman Turks. The resultant culture of the island reflects these multiple influences, although today it is part of modern Greece and Europe.

COURSE REF: C3679665
TUTOR: Tim Stimson

Course runs for 9 Weeks.

Between the wars Laura Knight was the most popular British painter, yet it was at Staithes that her career began. In her words and her art she vividly conveyed the life of the remarkable fisherfolk. We will explore the hardships endured by the people of the North Eastern coast’s fishing communities and how their way of life inspired the art and writing of this great artist.
